Students are each given an important date in mathematics history. They will then research the date and its relevance to mathematics and create a power point presentation for the class.
-Margaret Newman, Fredericksburg, VA

April showers bring May flowers! Have students create weather graphs using pictures to record the number of sunny days, rainy days and cloudy days this month. Use umbrella, sun, and cloud cut outs.
-Joyce Jamerson, Munci, IN

We will construct art (quilt squares, geometric designs, etc.) that directly illustrate the effects of math on art.
-Pat Wheeler, Little Rock, AR

Have the children research the different ways to count from different cultures. Have an art contest using only geometric figures and have the kids make cartoons with problems that require estimation skills.

Math Power: Packets - Grades 3-8
Problem Solving

Integrate math with reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students solve open-ended, real-life problems. A unique magazine format sets the scene with an article, data, charts, maps, photographs, and diagrams. Questions encourage students to read with math awareness, organize given information, and explore their solutions. Multiple mathematical approaches to each problem are fully explored.

Math Power: Bike-a-thon, Grade 6

Click on the link for a FREE Downloadable Student Book that explores a variety of concepts including ratios, rates, proportions, fractions, decimals, data analysis, statistics and probability.

More Math Activities

  • -Identify and name the different kinds of coins and sort by size and color. Put a handful of coins in a container and have students guess the total with a prize for the winner.

  • -Count and compare amounts of money less than or equal to one dollar. Move coins from one group to another so that both groups are equal in value.

  • -Pick a random measurement, like 3 inches, have students estimate things in the classroom they think are that size. Validate estimations with measurement tools and record data on charts or graphs.

  • Have students create a graph based on amounts of certain things in the classroom: windows, chairs, desks, pencils, books, etc.

  • Have the children measure themselves or each other using something standard in the classroom like paperclips. Have them compare their measurements.

  • Have a scavenger hunt based on measurements. Give students a list of things like measuring 15 mL of water , something that measures 5 cm, has a mass of 10 grams, etc. Have measuring devices out around the classroom.

  • Create a "Birthday Tree" where each branch represents a month and have the children record their birthdays accordingly.

  • Have a Circumference Challenge in which the children estimate and then measure the circumference of round objects like grapes, pumpkins, plates, clocks, balls, etc.
