Unit 1: Analyzing Tables
Interpret information in tables by
• identifying parts of a table: rows, row headings, columns, column headings, and entries
• locating key words in questions and matching them with the appropriate column and row headings
• making comparisons between column and row entires
• using tables with footnotes
• analyzing entries to make smallest/largest and increase/decrease comparisons
• analyzing tables that contain both words and figures

Unit 2: Outlining
Organize ideas according to their levels of importance by
• relating the parts of a two-level outline to main ideas and details in paragraphs
• constructing a two-level outline by identifying topic sentence and details, then underlining and listing key words in parallel structure
• constructing a three-level outline using headings (main ideas), subheadings (minor ideas), and details
• creating outlines for short and long explanatory passages
• differentiating introductory sentences from topic sentences

Unit 3: Reading Diagrams
Interpret diagrams by
• identifying the parts of location and process diagrams: title, labels, arrows, and explanations
• analyzing direction of movement and stages in process diagrams
• relating key words in questions to corresponding diagram parts in order to locate specific information
• recognizing main sections and sub-parts of complex diagrams
• reading a process diagram showing stages of development
• inferring the time span between different stages
• using diagrams as an aid to writing descriptions

Unit 4: Preview – Question – Read
Use the Preview – Question – Read (PQR) method by
• scanning and examining the passage as preparation for reading
• developing questions about the boldfaced or chapter headings to organize thinking before reading
• reading to answer the developed questions
• answering additional questions formulated during reading
• identifying the controlling idea in the conclusion

Unit 5: Studying Textbook Chapters
Study a textbook chapter in-depth by
• using the PQR method for scanning and examining the passage in preparation for reading
• using the vocabulary strategies to understand special terms, italicized words, and definitions
• locating context clues
• visualizing new terms
• using the glossary or dictionary and using new words in context
• recording key ideas and details by highlighting and paraphrasing
• evaluating statements from the passage
