Unit 1: Inferring the Five Ws and How
Make inferences by
• differentiating literal comprehension from inferential comprehension
• combining clues within realistic stories to make inferences about character, setting, and plot
• using clues within fantasy passages to make inferences about 5W and How questions
• visualizing story events as an aid to inferring elements of a complex story

Unit 2: Identifying Main Ideas and Details
Identify the topic sentence in a paragraph by
• drawing a parallel between category items and labels, and between two-level outlines and main ideas and details
• writing the topic sentence for a list of details
• using the information in a list to create a two-level outline
• constructing paragraphs from out-of-order sentences
• identifying three basic paragraph structures
• writing the missing main idea from paragraphs
• summarizing the main idea of each paragraph
• locating the main idea and details in a long passage
• comparing special purpose paragraphs: question – answer, term – definition, and statement – proof

Unit 3: Analyzing Literary Techniques
Interpret the author’s meaning by
• interpreting a character’s body language gestures as mood clues
• categorizing moods and gestures
• inferring the mood from setting, characters, and context clues
• locating mood shift in a story
• inferring mood from direct statement, action, and dialogue
• identifying key words and phrases that convey mood

Unit 4: Summarizing
Understand how summaries represent the central idea of a paragraph by
• summarizing descriptive paragraphs, using the main idea and its related details
• summarizing explanatory paragraphs containing causal connections
• paraphrasing paragraph summaries
• analyzing paragraph summaries to deduce a title for an article
• summarizing individual paragraphs in an article and combining paragraph summaries to create an article summary

Unit 5: Analyzing Facts and Comparisons
Evaluate statements as true or false and compare facts by
• locating supporting facts for a statement within the passage in which it appears
• differentiating direct statements from paraphrased statements
• proving main idea statements with supporting detail sentences
• identifying signal words for exaggeration
• analyzing true/false statements
• locating proof for statements in supporting details, pictures or diagrams
• making diagrams or drawings to figure out relationships of items in a passage or problem
• categorizing related statements
• comparing categorized facts

Unit 6: Listening Comprehension and Note Taking
Use the elements of a story to take brief notes by
• identifying the setting, the main character, and his or her goal in the beginning of the story
• analyzing the obstacles to the goal, the attempts, and the subsequent results in the middle of the story
• evaluating the final result at the end of the story in relation to the goal
• inferring multiple goals, setting, and plot in the story
• locating and using key words to represent the main elements of the story
• establishing the relationship between the goal and the final result
