Unit 1: Following Directions 1
Develop an understanding of spatial relation concepts by
• understanding familiar spatial relation words (up, down, on, off, in, out, near, far, over, under)
• following directions using spatial concepts
• associating spatial relation words with visual and oral representations
• enacting spatial concepts from a story
• following two-step verbal directions to create a story using spatial relation words

Unit 2: Identifying Missing Details
Identify similarities and differences by
• comparing pictures that differ in many, few, and only one detail
• isolating pictures and objects that are similar or different
• providing appropriate missing details to complete a picture in a series
• identifying differences and similarities among shapes

Unit 3: Following Directions II
Follow sequential directions by
• demonstrating knowledge of spatial concepts related to parts of a page (top, bottom, middle, left, right)
• following oral directions with spatial words to draw, cut, fold, paste, and construct an object
• applying knowledge of spatial relation words to geometric shapes
• assembling shapes to complete a picture

Unit 4: Learning About Numerals
Identify numerals 0 through 9 by
• making associations between numbers and objects
• associating numerals with their appropriate names
• comparing numerals to familiar shapes
• making visual associations between numerals and objects
• identifying numerals in and out of sequence
• establishing symbol/sound/word relationships

Unit 5: Categorizing Sensory Experience
Interpret sensory information as presented in story clues and illustrations by
• analyzing sound opposites (high, low; loud, soft)
• exploring sound as a clue to situation and identity
• evaluating and associating smells associated with certain places
• discriminating between activities of hearing, smelling, and seeing as depicted in art
• refining students’ understanding of sight
• analyzing the sensation of taste
• determining the identity of objects by touch
• using the five senses to identify, locate, and describe
• analyzing personal response to pictures in order to discriminate among the five senses

Unit 6: Distinguishing Between Real and Make-Believe
Separate the real from the make-believe by
• comparing a picture to an actual object
• distinguishing between real and make-believe objects in pictures
• identifying the make-believe components in a picture
• categorizing real and make-believe pictures
• converting real objects in pictures to make-believe objects
• using words to create mental pictures of real and make-believe objects
• creating appropriately real or make-believe mental pictures while reading or listening to stories

Unit 7: Predicting Outcomes
Predict outcomes by
• using personal experience to understand a progression of events
• considering the possibility of different endings
• recognizing the three parts of a story and their functions: the beginning, in which the characters and setting are introduced; the middle, in which the plot is developed; and the end, in which the resolution is provided
