1. WRITING A SET OF DIRECTIONS (Exposition)
A Group Unit

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: explaining a procedure to others

Thinking Objective: Sequencing steps of a procedure

Performance Rubric: Demonstrates familiarity with the elements of the writing process

2. REMEMBERING A SPECIAL FEELING (Personal Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing a narrative: informing other of an even that involves a strong emotional reaction

Thinking Objective: Analyzing an emotional reaction to a personal experience

Performance Rubric: Describes personal experience, feelings; Identifies critical reasons; Recounts thoughts, actions, and internal response; Makes brief statements of details clearly related to topic

3. DESCRIBING MY FAVORITE THING (Descriptive Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing a descriptive exposition: informing others about a favorite possession

Thinking Objective: Categorizing sensory details and using sensory language to describe

Performance Rubric: Precisely describes object’s size, shape, color, smell, sound, feel, and taste where applicable; Expresses why object is special; Audience can distinguish object from similar objects

4. WRITING AN OPINION PAPER (Persuasion)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: explaining a point of view to others

Thinking Objective: Analyzing familiar situations to form an opinion with logical, supportive reasons

Performance Rubric: States opinion; Gives complete, clearly sequenced reasons to support opinion; Includes facts and experiences

5. WRITING A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: informing others about a classmate

Thinking Objective: Analyzing and categorizing interview data for use in a biographical sketch

Performance Rubric: Includes information about preferences, background, private thoughts, and important moments; Elaborates why subject gave one or two responses; Includes final paragraph summarizing what was learned about subject

6. WRITING A FABLE (Invented Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing an invented narrative: persuading others to change their behavior through a fable

Thinking Objective: Analyzing story characters’ behavior and judging the consequences of their behavior
