Alexandra Siy grew up in Clarksville, New York, on 100 acres with four brothers. She spent summers jumping off the cliffs into the Onesquethaw Creek which ran through her backyard. When she was 12, her softball team won the New York State Championship and traveled to Los Angeles for the National Tournament. At 15, she was the only girl to try out and earn a place on a Babe Ruth League baseball team.
Very athletic, Alexandra was also very creative. When she was in the third grade her teacher wrote on her report card: "She shows a great deal of potential in the area of creative writing." She started keeping a journal when in seventh grade and dreamed of becoming a writer. At college Alexandra pursued many interests including architecture, biochemistry, and journalism. After dropping out of the University of Colorado School of Architecture as a freshman, Alexandra headed into the Rocky Mountains where she spent the rest of the semester hiking and skiing. Since then she has hiked, skied, and camped throughout North America and has traveled extensively in Europe.
Over the years Alexandra has worked as a janitor, waitress, bookkeeper, swimming teacher, secretary, lifeguard, landscaper, copywriter, and research technician. She also worked for the U.S. Olympic Committee during the 1980 winter games in Lake Placid, New York.
Alexandra graduated from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh with a B.A. in biology. She was awarded a fellowship for graduate study at the State University of New York at Albany, where she received a M.S. in science education. After graduation she taught biology in a New Haven public high school. After the birth of her daughter, Alexandra left teaching and soon began writing.
Her six-book nonfiction series, Circle of Life (Dillon Press/Macmillan) was published in 1991 and 1992. Three books in her four-book series, Global Villages (Dillon Press/Macmillan,1993), were named Notable Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies by the NCSS-CBC. Alexandra has also written for Adirondack Life Magazine.
Alexandra lives in Anchorage, Alaska, with her family.
