Dianna Hutts Aston
Biography:

In her children's book, Mama's Wild Child, Papa's Wild Child, Dianna Hutts Aston writes about the animal kingdom's mothers and fathers poetically, while weaving in the factual. This ability to blend whimsy with information is reflected in her other works including Loony Little, (Candlewick); When You Were Born (Candlewick); and Bless This Mouse, (Handprint Books).

In 1996, Dianna reached two milestones: the birth of her second child, a daughter named Lizzie; and her first foray into writing picture books for children. Though earning a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Houston, Dianna said she still ended up approaching the picture book market like a beginner. "I had the high-fallutin' idiotic notion that because of my writing background, I'd easily be able to break into children's writing. The first picture book manuscript I sent out was 1,800 words and my cover letter was two single-spaced pages extolling my virtues. I had so much to learn, and most of my schooling came from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) - and a life-changing children's writer's workshop with Kathi Appelt and Debbie Leland," she confesses.

Her perseverance led to the sale of six of her manuscripts. "What kept me going was simply the passion I have for picture books. Without that, I'd have dropped out early. Through the years, I've heard countless writers and artists say perseverance is the key to publishing success. I still marvel that I kept writing, despite at least 200 no-thank-yous over four years it took before I sold the first manuscript, When You Were Born. My editor said she thought it was special and could I tweak it a bit. Of course I could tweak it. I immediately emailed everyone I know, called my parents, my brother, my Buda friends, my SCBWI friends - it was a lovely, lovely moment."

Dianna has a philosophy that will keep librarians and literacy advocates across the globe smiling and children looking forward to more of her works. "Reading is inseparable from writing. Whenever I feel blocked or uninspired, I go to the library and check out 20-40 picture books. Then I sit and read. This ALWAYS helps me get in touch with my creative energy. And I can't stress enough how important and inspiring reading new and classic picture books has been."

Dianna has also written these award-winning books: An Egg is Quiet (Chronicle), A Seed is Sleepy (Chronicle), The Moon over Star (Dial), and An Orange in January (Dial).

Dianna lives in San Miguel de Allende; founder of The Oz Project whose mission is to provide inspirational opportunities for children that ignite the imagination, inspire them to dream without limits, and to have the courage to pursue their dreams; aspiring hot air balloon pilot.
