Leslie Bulion
Biography: Leslie Bulion has written poetry for her own enjoyment since fourth grade. She has been interested in science and nature for as long as she can remember. Leslie earned graduate degrees in Oceanography and Social Work, and worked as a medical social worker and school social worker. During her social worker years, a good friend and editor enjoyed a letter Leslie wrote and suggested to Leslie that she might try writing professionally. Leslie wrote for parenting magazines and the internet when her two daughters were small, and has been writing stories for children since 1998. Her first book, Fatuma's New Cloth (Moon Mountain Publishing) won the 2003 Children's Africana Book Award for best picture book. She is also the author of Tall Ships Fun! (Moon Mountain Publishing), Missing Pieces and One Piece at a Time (Steck-Vaughn Power Up! reading series), and has edited chapter books for the education market. When Leslie took a week-long entomology course, the children in the novel she was writing studied bugs, too. When that novel was finished, Leslie wasn't finished with bugs, so she combined her love of poetry and entomology into the pages of Hey There, Stink Bug! She shares her enthusiasm for writing and learning with students through frequent school author visits. Leslie continues to study bugs in her backyard in Durham, Connecticut and everywhere else she goes wtih her husband, her two daughters, and her two big dogs.

Witty poems describe the devious and diabolical methods that allow insects to capture prey, trick predators, attract mates-and outlast other species. Accurate and detailed information accompanying each poem explains the science of the bug behaviors. Bright, eye-catching linoleum-cut illustrations capture each insect in action.

"This is a book that will make you say, 'Wow, this is a book that can make learning fun!'"
— Esmé Raji Codell

"They'll laugh, they'll learn, and hopefully they won't lose their lunch!"
School Library Journal

"The poems surely are not grist for the poet laureate selection mill; nevertheless, they are entertaining, though occasionally a tad crude. Kids will love them."
