Ann Barrow
Biography: Ann Barrow was the illustrator of many books for children, including Rumpelstiltskin (Reader’s Digest), the All-Star Sports series from Peachtree Publishers, and Big Blue. Her career began in 1977 and included book jackets, children’s magazines, greeting cards, giftware, and portraiture. She specialized in drawing realistic children and aimed to capture the spirit and beauty of each subject, whether the child appeared on the pages of a children’s book or became a family heirloom portrait.

Ann Barrow’s illustration work was featured in Colonial Homes Magazine and Decorative Arts Magazine. Her work has been seen in many exhibitions of children’s book illustrators including, “Women Illustrators in New England” at Radcliffe College and at the Southborough Arts Center in Southborough, Massachusetts.

Her illustrations have been published by Atheneum, Goldenbooks, Hallmark Cards, Cricket Magazine, Highlights for Children, and many others. Ann illustrated award-winning author Ursula K. LeGuin’s first picture book, A Visit from Dr. Katz.

Besides her illustration work, Ann had a successful portrait business. She was regularly commissioned to do portraits of children in black and white (pencil) and in color using watercolors, colored pencil, and pastel.

Sadly, Ann passed away in 2005. She and her art will be missed.

Kye's thoughts and dreams are full of whales and whale facts. But Kye wants more than just facts, she wants her dream: to swim with a blue whale. With her mother's help, she just might get her wish.

"The possibility of an ordinary child living out such a grand dream makes for a nice adventure story, and the book adeptly blends considerable information about whales into the telling. Children will enjoy the package for personal reading, and it should find good use in classrooms as well."
