Grumbly, droopy, dreamy bunnies. They don't want to get out of bed. They don't want to brush their teeth and go to school. They want to sleep. . . warm and deep beneath the covers on their beds. They don't want to tie their shoes or eat oatmeal. They don't want to play on the jungle gym. . .well, maybe for a while. Perhaps toss a ball, or play in mud. Learning how to dance and sing, or adding up numbers, or drawing pictures isn't such a bad thing. When evening comes, and grumbly bunnies have full tummies and comfy jammies, they march to bed. Warm and deep beneath the covers, they dream of the day ahead.

Whimsical, playful illustrations in bright, wake-up colors enhance this charming verse, following grumbly bunnies throughout an energizing day. So they aren't morning bunnies, but who could resist a beautiful, sunny day with lots to do and games to play?

In this story told in rhyme, "groggy wake ups, lumpy oatmeal, and frumpy faces" start the day for these three little rabbits. At school, their outlook changes as they go "jungle gymming" and enjoy "munching lunches," and "learning lessons/numbers/dancing/songs and sings." The day continues to improve with a "huggy mommy," bubble bath, and a comfy bed. These bunnies need their sleep because "there's another day ahead." Youngsters will identify with the siblings and their slow, grumpy start. Descriptive phrases such as "stumble bumbling" and "snuffle snoring" linger as children read and laugh through this sweet book. The watercolor pictures capture the animals' changing moods and the familiar details of home and school.
  Kirkus Reviews - March 1, 2000
Welch's (Dancing with Daddy, 1999, etc.) tale is an ode for all those sleepyheads out there who face each day with a bleary-eyed grimace. In rhyming verse, readers follow a trio of grouchy siblings as they awake and overcome the hurdles of getting dressed and ready for school. With lugubrious relish, Welch recounts the dreary morning bus ride and reluctant march to the school house, "Grumpy Bunnies/riding buses/knobby seats on bumpy streets/stomping, trudging on the pavement/scuffy shoes and achy feet." Yet, Welch also demonstrates that there is life after a vile morning as the Grumpy Bunnies begin to get into the swing of things out on the jungle gym and in the classroom. By the end of the day, they are raring to go and ready for a gleeful romp in the tub. Welch's spare verse eloquently conveys the rabbits' every mood while Lyon's cheerful illustrations, full of familiar details and hilarious pictures of bunnies' scowling visages will generate plenty of giggles. Reluctant risers, while taking solace in the fact that they are not alone, will be inspired by the Grumpy Bunnies' turnaround.
