The play's the thing! Join Rufus and his motley canine crew on opening night as they act out fourteen silly, tongue-twisting nursery rhymes. Giggle as Stella plays Wild Wilma Winkles and hula hoops the night away; laugh as Mops acts out frazzled, flustered Dr. Foster's fight against the flu; and hoot as Rufus hilariously hams it up as Handy Spandy, Jack-a-dandy. Best-selling author/illustrator Iza Trapani has extended each poem, playing with the sounds and rhythms that make language so much fun for young readers and help to build phonemic awareness. Children will also love looking on each page for hidden pictures that begin with the featured letter from the alliterative poems. This book is good for your brain because: Rhythm and Rhyme, Familiar Nursery Rhymes ![]() Author's Note: Dear Friends, My love for nursery rhymes began when I was seven years old. I had just arrived in the United States from Poland and was given a big, beautiful Mother Goose collection. Speaking only Polish at the time, I soon began to learn English while I spent many magical hours immersed in that book. The sounds, rhythms, and playful language in the verses captivated me. These days I am honored and delighted to be using those beloved nursery rhymes in the picture books I create. For this collection I selected poems with fun sounds and alliteration and extended them with a stanza or more of my own words, striving to maintain the integrity, plot, and meter of the original verses. Because of the nature of these poems, I decided to have Rufus and his friends act them out, adding to the fun of the "play" on words. Children adore story time with cherished adults, and these poems are perfect for reading aloud together. So have fun, share giggles, and explore the wondrous world of words. I hope you enjoy reading these rhymes with your little ones as much as I enjoyed writing them for you! Warm wishes, Iza Stage your own readers' theater! Trapani continues her trademark extensions of beloved nursery tales and songs with this latest, a collection of 14 tongue tanglers. Beginning with the traditional Mother Goose stanzas, Trapani then goes on to add at least one more in the same rhyme and rhythm pattern, seamlessly continuing the story. Dr. Foster's unfortunate trip to Gloucester ends this way: "Docter Foster, frazzled, flustered, / In a flutter flew. / The spill caused a chill, / And the doctor fell ill / With a fever and flu—achoo!" The stand-outs among the lesser-known rhymes include "Cackle, Cackle Mother Goose," about a goose with only enough loose feathers to stuff half a pillow, and "Fiddle Dee Dee," about the marriage of the fly to the bumblebee. A cast of five wonderfully expressive dogs, including the titular Rufus, act out the humorous rhymes. The illustrations are filled with details, including hidden pictures that readers can search for; a list is in the back. Trapani is a staple for young children—don't miss this one.

A prolific author presents 14 extended poems, many of them fun tongue twisters. Rufus, a dog, introduces his canine friends Lulu, Tucker, Stella, and Mops; dressed in colorful costumes, the pups act out familiar rhymes as if they were onstage. On the final page, Rufus asks readers to go back to the beginning to look for objects hidden within the illustrations. For example, in "Betty Botter," five cleverly disguised items begin with the letter "B"-a balloon, bone, boot, butterfly, and button. The lively artwork was created using watercolor, ink, and colored pencils. Each actor/pooch is a different breed; they all have priceless facial expressions and vary with the situations. Children will ask for repeated readings as they search for the pictures again and again.

Nursery rhymes are a staple in childhood. Who didn’t grow up without at least a little Mother Goose chanted at them? My 66-year-old mother still whips out two or three every time I visit and I know I’ve taken up the tradition with my own children.Iza Trapani took fourteen of those classical nursery rhymes, extended them and illustrated them in her well-known style, giving us Rufus and Friends: Rhyme Time. Rufus, Lulu, Tucker, Stella and Mops “act out” Peter Piper, Handy Spandy, Wee Willie Winkie and other familiar rhymes in their bright, squeezable, and immediately familiar “Trapani-ness.” Story time will be fun with these rhymes and tongue twisters and you’ll probably find yourself trying to figure out where Mother Goose stops and author Trapani begins. Meanwhile, children can pass the time trying to find the hidden objects in the illustrations as they listen and giggle while you stumble over your tongue. This read-aloud doesn’t have quite the ease of Trapani’s I’m a Little Teapot but my little readers still give it a thumbs up. |
