The read-and-play format is irresistible: each board book has SIX colorful jigsaws built right in. When they've completed them, children can then take the six jigsaws and connect them in whatever shape and pattern they want. The result is one giant, impressive floor puzzle that's up to four feet long.
Throughout, young readers will enjoy answering questions about the story and lifting the flaps to see if they're right. It's great interactive entertainment!
Ship ahoy--pirate ship that is! Dolphin has spotted an empty one floating on the high seas, and she's so excited. Curled Up With A Good Kid's Book - May 1, 2011This special activity book not only contains a clever story that underscores the importance of working together to accomplish a task; it also offers six jigsaw puzzles featuring the main characters. The puzzle pieces are large enough that little fingers should be able to handle them with ease.
The story itself follows the adventure of a dolphin who discovers an abandoned pirate ship but needs five of his friends to help him access the vessel’s treasure chest. Each of the dolphin’s buddies has a specific role to play based on his or her physical characteristics. For example, the electric eel lights up the underwater wreck site so that everyone can see, while the walrus uses his large tusks to pry the top off the chest.
Once it has been opened, the dolphin shares the chest’s contents with his friends Although they all thank him, the dolphin ends the story with these wise words: “But the real treasure is all my friends.”
You’ll also find a series of questions about the story. “What two letters are written on the treasure chest?” “What are Whale’s two colors?” and “How many arms does Octopus have?” are just some of these queries. Flip up the flap and you’ll discover the correct answer.
It isn’t that often that one picture book functions on so many levels. This is an excellent participation book but it does pose a choking hazard for very young children. I would not let a child who still puts things in his or her mouth use this book until the habit has been outgrown.
BookLoons Reviews - May 29, 2011This large format activity book features not only big, bold colorful illustrations and an adventure story but also six large jigsaw puzzles of the featured sea creatures showcased in the narrative.
When Dolphin discovers an abandoned pirate ship floating in the sea her curiosity is piqued and she wants to explore inside the vessel. Unable to get on the ship, Dolphin is frustrated until whale comes along and offers to sink the old ship.
Now the ship is on the ocean floor, but it is too dark to see anything until Electric Eel offers to light the wreck. The three friends quickly discover the pirate's treasure chest, but the ship's mast is laying across it. They can't budge the chest until Sawfish swims up and saws through the mast, but there is still a problem. The chest is locked!
Now it is up to Walrus to use his mighty tusks to pry off the top, which he easily does. Crowding around the open chest the group sees something glittering inside but how will they get it all out? That's where the many arms of Octopus come in. With his long tentacles he divvies up the treasure and everyone gets some of the glittering gold jewelry.
At the bottom of each two page spread you'll find two questions that test your knowledge of what you have just read. For example, 'How many friends are gathered at the treasure chest?' or 'What did the Walrus break with his tusks?' Flip the flap and you'll find the correct answer.
This clever book works on a number of levels and is one that any child will enjoy reading as well as playing with. Since it does pose a choking hazard because of the puzzle pieces, don't let a child prone to placing things in his or her mouth use this book unsupervised.
