Great STUFF for the sports fan!

This book hits a grand slam right out of the park! No diehard devotee of the diamond will be able to resist this completely out-of-the ordinary look at the sport. It's rich in anecdotes about team superstitions (from the black cat that haunted the Cubs to the "Curse of the Babe"), the antics of the superstars, and other stuff that comes out of left field. Think today's umpires have a temper? Wait till you read about the 19th century New Jersey ump who pulled out a gun and shoved it in the face of a player who came at him with a bat. Or about the time three Brooklyn Dodger runners found themselves at third base…together.

  Book Ideas - February 15, 2011
With spring baseball set to begin, it is time to add to your store of baseball trivia so that you can dazzle your fellow hardball buddies with your vast knowledge. Martirano has collected some rather weird and wacky information that I doubt you have come across in other similar books.

He's divided this esoteric material into categories he's dubbed unusual, magical, painful, and traditional stuff. Accompanying the narrative are humorous black and white line drawings that illustrate some of his stories.

As you read this entertaining volume you'll discover why many fans, especially in Canada, are convinced the Montreal Expos were cursed, the story of the San Francisco Giant player's plaque that went missing for decades, and how a St. Louis Cardinal player, Vince Coleman, has his season ended when the grounds crew accidentally rolled a field tarp over him while he was doing stretching exercises.

Those interested in old records, bizarre events, very peculiar facts, and amazing moments in baseball history will find this a quick but entertaining read.
