Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: persuading others by inventing a group identity for the class

Thinking Objective: Generalizing specific attributes to determine a group identity

Performance Rubric: Demonstrates the familiarity with the elements of the writing process

2. REMEMBERING A SPECIAL PLACE (Descriptive Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing a narrative: informing others about a place of personal significance

Thinking Objective: Analyzing the significance of a place to discover relevant, descriptive details

Performance Rubric: Uses sensory details that clearly describe place; Narrates new, unusual, or important experience; Includes strong emotional reaction; Reader can easily picture place and understand why writer finds it special

3. WRITING AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (Personal Narrative)

Writing Objective: Writing a personal narrative: informing others about oneself by sharing personal facts and experiences

Thinking Objective: Selecting significant facts that describe one’s own life and personality

Performance Rubric: Contains significant past events; Includes preferences and/or hobbies; Speculates about future plans, hopes, fears, or dreams; Presents in chronological order

4. WRITING DIRECTIONS FOR AN ABSTRACT DESIGN (Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: explaining how to draw an original design

Thinking Objective: Sequencing steps in a process and using precise language to describe

Performance Rubric: Each step explains one design part or action; Precisely describes size, shape, location, relationship, distance, and actions; Presents steps in logical sequence; Audience can duplicate writer’s design

5. CONDUCTING AN INTERVIEW (Exposition)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: informing others about a community job

Thinking Objective: Generating and organizing questions that elicit a description of a job

Performance Rubric: Shows keen analysis; Asks relevant questions; Questions indicating basic facts about job were gathered beforehand; Organized to include: subject’s background, job duties, subject’s opinion of job or job’s importance to community

6. WRITING A PERSUASIVE LETTER (Persuasion)

Writing Objective: Writing an exposition: persuading others to accept a solution to a community problem

Thinking Objective: Evaluating information and developing a solution

Performance Rubric: Clearly states problem; Gives information to support problem’s existence; Proposes practical solution; Includes statements to show other points of view considered; States plan of action proposed for audience in firm, reasonable tone
