As the truth of the killing finally emerges, first-time novelist Kam keeps atmosphere, suspense and characters realistically entwined. The language has a somewhat old-fashioned flavor, and although readers are soon likely to suspect that Cass is a rather unreliable narrator, Cass' supernatural experience and revelation of events unfold smoothly. The well-developed cast of characters provides the needed red herrings in classic mystery fashion. Ideal for middle school readers who are on the cusp of discovering their romantic selves, Devin's reckless sexualized encounters with the opposite sex contrast well with Cass' careful exploration of her own interest in a boy who actually sees her and finds her attractive. The Photoshop-produced illustrations are crisp and colorful, although in rather flat hues. The story has a noir feel to it, as the detectives all wear trench coats and talk tough. The lengthy text is laden with insect jokes, puns, and bug names and the plot is rather convoluted. Through clever descriptions and thoughtful personification, Biedrzycki easily lures the reader into a believable world where insects, such as Mickey Mantis, Derek Skeeter, and Fly Cobb, successfully compete in the all-American pastime. Finn’s new friends have his back as he struggles to cope with his ectoplasmic adversary, who makes it very clear that she wants his family to leave the house. Hansen expertly juggles several natural and supernatural plotlines as the kids’ investigations lead them into the annals of Waubinaw’s history. Finn, Sully, and Lewis are cued white; Cricket was adopted from China as a baby by a wealthy older couple, and Isa’s parents are Latine immigrants.
