As the title asserts, the jumping bean is "not a bean" but the seed pod of a desert plant known as the yerba de la flecha, which hides a secret stowaway. A female moth has laid her eggs near the seed pods of the yerba plant, and when they hatch, the caterpillars crawl inside, using the seed pod for protection and sustenance before pupating and emerging as adult moths. As a seed-encased caterpillar jumps around the desert floor seeking shelter and safety, readers count along in Spanish while learning vocabulary related to the desert ecosystem: cascabeles (rattlesnakes) and arroyos (streams), for example. González's bright, friendly illustrations depict a vibrant desert teeming with life—far from the desolation often associated with its dry climate. "Siete amigos" also join the proceedings, depicted in varying shades of tan and peach, appearing to represent some of the diversity in skin tone among Mesoamerican peoples. Much like the seed pods' concealed cargo, this informational picture book packs plenty of facts and learning moments into a thoroughly entertaining package. A caterpillar larva burrows its way into the seedpod of the shrub, where it grows by drinking the water that seeps into it. When the seedpod falls to the ground, the caterpillar is tucked inside, jumping when necessary to escape the heat of the desert or get to safety. A group of children come upon the “jumping bean” and add it to their game, hoping it will “jump” to a specific spot as they observe it. Soon, though, the bean goes still to become something entirely new. This impeccably designed book tells the story of the Mexican jumping bean. Though not a bean at all, this plant has nonetheless made a memorable name for itself through its unusual nature. Thoughtful, detailed illustrations transport readers through the Mexican desert as the caterpillar completes its journey. The text introduces Spanish words while counting from one to 10 throughout the story. VERDICT This is an excellent read-aloud for elementary school children, especially those who are looking for a gentle introduction to the Spanish language and some accompanying cultural connections. In this accessible life-cycle/counting book that organically interweaves Spanish and English, Martínez traces the metamorphosis of “una oruga — a wiggly caterpillar” as it embarks on a pupation journey, that, with the aid of many desert helpers, ends with transformation and a spreading of wings as “a majestic polilla…soars into the sky.” Martínez takes readers inside the seedpod, spotlighting its daily interactions — from the sun that warms it; to cacti (“dos saguaros”) that provide shade; to the predators (“cuatro coyotes,” “cinco cuervos”) its clicking and clacking scares away; to children (“siete amigos”) who come upon it while exploring the desert and use it to play a game. González’s digital illustrations harmonize subdued desert hues, mixing greens, russets, and blues. Capacious double-page spreads capture intricate goings-on inside the seedpod while simultaneously conveying wide-open desert expanses. Martínez (from El Paso) attends to the complexity of this desert landscape—a region politically and environmentally fraught—by tenderly centering its beautifully complex life in an engagingly child-friendly way. Still inside, the caterpillar rolls its home, referred to here as “Not a Bean,” into the shade and occasionally makes it jump. “Siete amigos” find the Not a Bean. They draw a circle of “ocho óvalos” (eight ovals) on the ground and play a game with the jumping beans but leave them in the desert. Later, the caterpillar spins its cocoon inside the pod. Time passes until, one day, it emerges as a moth and flies away. An author’s note discusses the jumping bean moth, its life cycle, and its unique relationship with the Mexican plant producing the pods it needs. Illustrated with attractive digital art, the book demonstrates how a particular caterpillar becomes a moth, offers practice in Spanish numbers, and incorporates Spanish words (translated in the appended glossary) within an English text. The creature is “Not a Monster”—it’s an axolotl. Martínez devotes the first half of the book to chronicling the axolotl’s life journey—from birth to mating—in eclectic, whimsical strokes, egged on by González’s sublime, earthy artwork. It’s a tenderhearted ode to the water-based salamander. From there, the axolotl’s tale pivots to spotlight the creature’s connection to Xolotl, the Aztec god of monstrous things, said to have leapt into a lake and turned into an axolotl. “Guided by the stories their abuelos have told them,” two friends “row their chalupa morada” into the canals, spearheading cleanup efforts to remove plastic and bottles from the water. This unusual salamander is not a monster, though it's described as an "Aztec god of monstrous things" that jumped in the water in Aztec mythology. In her artwork, González honors that mythology with Aztec motifs and pictograms tucked into the illustrations, while comprehensively depicting the axolotl's growing phases. Once the axolotl is fully grown, the story introduces two children searching for the mythological creature in the canals. Instead, they find pollution, which threatens the axolotl's habitat, but they help clean the water, eventually revealing a collection of axolotls eggs beginning to hatch. Martínez sprinkles plenty of Spanish words throughout the story, which are defined in a glossary; color terms also appear in their matching hue. In the science classroom, teachers can use the book to encourage discussion about both the lifecycle of this unique salamander and related topics, such as care for the environment and pollution. An up-close read with parents or caregivers will encourage talk of the integrated Spanish words. The tight narrative and large, bright pictures fully engage readers. Once the child and adult have read the book together, the child will be itching to get hands-on and touch the full-color illustrations that accompany the story. Highly recommended for ages three to seven, this bright and beautifully illustrated book is perfect for read-alouds or story time and is truly a standout.

Downloadables

Download the Cover

Download the Series Activity Kit

Details

English Hardcover
ISBN: 978-1-62354-303-7

Spanish Hardcover
ISBN: 978-1-62354-483-6

English Paperback
ISBN: 978-1-62354-569-7

Spanish Paperback
ISBN: 978-1-62354-561-1

Ages: 3–7
Page count: 32
11 x 8 1/2

[/TABS]

By: Claudia Guadalupe Martínez / Illustrated by: Laura González
Translated by Carlos E. It eats the inside and drinks the moisture produced by the plant until the hardened pod drops to the ground. The caterpillar is able to move the pod in a way that makes it seem to be jumping, hence its reputation as a jumping bean. The jumping bean travels through the desert startling the animals it encounters. First, it meets rattlesnakes, making “¡clic, clac!” noises like the snakes’ tails. Then, it startles some coyotes and ravens with its movements and sounds. Lastly, a group of children gather several of the beans, delighted by their unusual behavior. Eventually, the caterpillar begins to change within its pod and emerges as a full-grown moth. This Spanish translation of Not a Bean (2019) is at a higher level than many picture books, making it a great choice for primary-grade readers. The text is well supported by González’s illustrations, which detail the process of the caterpillar’s transformation well, and an informative author’s note.

School Library Journal

Part story, part poem, part non-fiction book, this Spanish translation of Not a Bean is a winning combo. Told with lyricism, Martínez's text explains the life cycle of the Cydia saltitans, a moth that lays its eggs inside of a seed pod. Once it’s dry, the seeds fall on the ground with a growing larva inside. As the little critter shifts inside the pod, it moves, so it’s best known as a “Mexican jumping bean,” though it’s clear from the title that the pod is not, in fact, a bean. With a desert setting rendered at various times of day, in blues and tans, and with an increasing number of local fauna, this beautifully illustrated book is a crowd pleaser. It's a great choice for those learning the language or who are already fluent. An author’s note offers more facts about this fascinating bug. Native to Xochimilco, Mexico City, the axolotl hatches out of its egg, sprouts fins and gills, and, when it is fully developed, finds a mate. The two protagonists make it their mission to clean up the polluted river and protect the natural habitat of these animals to prevent their extinction. In the author’s note, Martínez provides cultural context for the axolotl's symbolism and connection to the Aztec god Xolotl. Illustrations by González are done in traditional media and Photoshop with soft hues that emphasize the gentleness of this critter. In the text itself, color words, such as “azul” or “anaranjado,” are printed in their appropriate hues to aid young readers who are in the stages of deciphering their colors. A captivating read-aloud for early childhood storytimes with an emphasis on environmentalism.

School Library Journal

This Spanish-language edition of Not a Monster portrays the life cycle of the axolotl or “el monstruo del agua.” Through simple and poetic text, readers meet this distinct amphibian, an endangered species that inhabits the Xochimilco canals of Mexico City. A palette of pastel colors accompanies this informational text, showcasing the variety of fauna and flora that this unique creature encounters throughout its life. Two children rowing through the canals are incorporated into the narrative and present briefly the Aztec history and myth of this animal as well as humanity’s role in taking care, preserving, and advocating for the axolotl's existence and future in its natural habitat. Color concepts are integrated throughout the story, which enhances and provides an interactive and playful approach to this nonfiction picture book. An author’s note and photographs of Martínez's own axolotl pets are included in the back matter. Interspersed with Spanish words, this clever tribute to an endangered rodent is woven with introductions to shapes. At birth, the prairie dog is a “tiny, hairless thing, nuzzling its mamá with the triángulo of its nose.” As it grows and joins other pups, they eat “grass and plants with their sharp rectángulos for teeth.” Though these animals face perils from humans, they also have allies. A diverse group of schoolchildren on a field trip learn about the prairie dogs and are spurred to help protect them, getting out their “papel cuadrado” (paper in the shape of a square) and writing letters. Their efforts pay off, and a “No farming” sign soon goes up. Now, “as far as those óvalo-shaped eyes can see, there are prairie dogs and prairie dogs and prairie dogs.” Like the creators’ previous titles—Not a Bean (2019) and Not a Monster (2023)—this is a playful look at a potentially misunderstood creature. González’s earth-toned illustrations are both “aw”-inspiring and meticulously detailed, especially the cutaway images of the underground homes. A celebration of environmental action, a look at a most fascinating rodent, and an exploration of Spanish shape words—this one succeeds on all fronts.
A worthy continuation of a stellar series.

Details

English Hardcover
ISBN: 978-1-62354-304-4

Spanish Hardcover
ISBN: 978-1-62354-492-8

Spanish Paperback
ISBN: 978-1-62354-603-8

Ages: 3–7
Page count: 32
11 x 81/2

Publication date: June 17, 2025

[/TABS]

By: Claudia Guadalupe Martínez / Illustrated by: Laura González

What's that barking, yipping sound?
