There are two parallel texts at the beginning-one that works for reading aloud and another, in a slightly smaller font, that provides more explanation and background. But at the climax, it becomes one story, and a very scary one at that, as the falling water shifts and pins Muir against the granite wall. The rough strokes of the pastel-and-colored-pencil illustrations emphasize the texture of the rock, water and wood of the natural world Muir loved. Though sometimes dark (this was an evening adventure), these images show nicely at a distance. Pictured at the beginning and the end are quotations from Muir's writings, penned in script that will probably stump young readers, emphasizing his steady habit of journal-keeping. Red, a color strongly associated with Chinese New Year and symbolic of good luck, is used as a motif throughout; fittingly, Goldy Luck wears a red sweater and tights. Employing complementary and analogous colors provides balance, and the illustrations are appealing and humorous without being over-the-top. This is a fun retelling of a familiar tale with Chinese-American characters and cultural references, using the celebration of Chinese\/Lunar New Year as the backdrop for a story that can be enjoyed year round. Zong's acrylic illustrations bring Goldy's culture to life through small details in the households as well as the Chinese New Year parade glimpsed through the doors and windows, though some of the details (Mr. Chan's massage chair) may seem stereotypical. In Goldilocks tradition, Goldy Luck wreaks havoc and the Chans discover her: “Look. Considering the overtly positive nature of the work, adult readers might stress that while Sing overcame the immediate setback of accidents, he could not be expected to defeat the systemic prejudice that deprived him--and other Chinese Americans and Chinese immigrants--of countless opportunities, no matter how big his dreams. Only two or three mules are depicted (not possibly enough for the job). Overall, this pencil and watercolor illustrated and eloquently written account of a Chinese American will satisfy every taste. The text sits directly on full-bleed illustrations with just one or two lines to a spread, sometimes only a word. Pacing is also indicated with ellipses and page turns. “Slow steps—shuffle, straddle, saunter…sand” take the pair to the beach. Later there’s a “Steady step, solid step, shaky step…stumble,” and finally “Swift steps—scamper, scuttle, scurry…shower” before bedtime. Lechuga’s illustrations, done in an appropriately wintry, bleached-out palette, add depth and detail. The two have pale skin and straight light and darker brown hair for child and adult respectively. They dress appropriately for a cold winter walk. The adult’s A-shaped figure suggests possible pregnancy. The child carries a doll, which also wears a knitted cap. The beach they visit is full of wonders. Most astonishing are the crabs—who return, in this well-rounded tale, in a shared bedtime story. The winter landscape and changing sky are carefully depicted with added watercolor textures. It’s a wonderful conceit, and the sibilant goodness manages to tell a full tale by way of clever punctuation and a limited vocabulary: “slow steps—shuffle, straddle, saunter . . . sand,” it reads as the pair heads to the beach, “Slip . . . splash . . . sink . . . soaked!” as the doll falls into the water. LeChuga’s captivating illustrations, a splendid mix of digital drawings and watercolor textures, evoke both the vast emptiness of a beach in winter and the activities to be found there upon closer inspection; a teeming tidepool is particularly striking. This book is based upon the author’s chance encounter with LeVar Burton when he was a little boy. The real photo is reproduced at the end of the book along with a brief biography of LeVar Burton and information about how to watch Reading Rainbow and which episodes were referenced in the book. The illustrations are soft and gentle, showing how a child might be inspired in their imagination by the stories and information shared in each Reading Rainbow episode to the point where they feel as if Burton is right there with them.
