Iris Van Rynbach

Iris Van Rynbach has illustrated numerous books for young people. Over the River and Through the Woods (Little Brown) written by Lydia Maria Child and illustrated by Iris was chosen as a Reading Rainbow Book. Everything from a Nail to a Coffin (Orchard) which she wrote and illustrated, was selected as a Notable Children's Trade Book in the field of Social Studies by the National Council of Social Studies and the Children's Book Council. Washington, D.C.: A Scrapbook was awarded Learning Magazine's 2001 Teacher's Choice Award.

Her illustrations have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, Gourmet, Yankee, and have graced the cover of the New Yorker numerous times. She is a regular contributor to Hartford Magazine. Her work has been featured in two complete issues of The Hartford Courant's Northeast Magazine--"Iris Van Rynbach's Architecture in Hartford" and "The Secret Garden of Hartford."

Iris studied at Pratt Institute in New York City, the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and Parsons School of Design in New York City. She has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Hartford Art School and Central Connecticut State University. Currently she teaches at University of Connecticut, as well as offering classes for adults and children in her studio.

A resident of Glastonbury, Connecticut, Iris visits many area elementary schools to discuss writing and illustrating with eager students.
