AVian Adventurer Activities

CLIFFHANGER ENDING!

Snowy Owl Rescue: Raptor Recovery, Book 1 of the Avian Adventurers series, ends with Jet telling Michael that they have been watching some nests in the woods, and some birds need their help. The Avian Adventurers will be back in another story, coming in 2026. Keep an eye out for that book, called Win It for the Warblers: Migrator Protection.

All About Snowy Owls

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a fantastic resource for all things birds. Their snowy owl page is chockful of information!

Snowstorm Safety

Does it snow where you live? Snowstorms can be fun—but they can be dangerous, too. Jet and Michael learn that the hard way.

There are three main things that all raptors have that help them survive. Can you name them? Here are some hints, and when you’re ready for the answer to each one, click the link.

• In order to hunt for food, one of a raptor’s five senses needs to be very powerful.

• When a raptor swoops down to grab its next meal, it needs these.

• Once a raptor catches prey, it needs a way to eat it.

What's in a Name?

All through the book, Michael makes comments about Jet’s birding group’s name: the Junior Birdwatching Club. Michael, who isn’t even part of the club yet, thinks it needs a better name. List all the suggestions Michael gives. How many can you count?

Character Characteristics

• There are two main characters in Snowy Owl Rescue. Who are they? How are they alike or different?

• There are two important secondary characters in the story. Who are they? (This one might be trickier. There are actually several secondary characters. But two are more prominent (more important to the story) than the others.)

• There is one antagonist character in Snowy Owl Rescue. An antagonist is someone who causes problems. Who is this character?

• There are supporting characters in the story, too. Name some of them.

Michael, the star of the soccer team, is about to kick his first practice shot when Jet, a bird nerd and member of the Junior Bird Club, shows Michael what he would have missed by being so focused on the ball—a rare snowy owl on the goal post.

The next day, a horde of birders arrive and Michael thinks he may never get his soccer field back. But when Jet finds out the owl is sick, they enlist Michael in an urgent rescue operation as they race against the clock and against a sudden snowstorm to find help. Will they make it in time?
